Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal weight calculators provide a reference weight range based on height (and sometimes sex). Several formulas exist; none is perfect for every person.

Common Formula (Devine)

Men: Ideal Weight (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)
Women: Ideal Weight (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60)

Other formulas (Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) produce slightly different results.

Example

Woman, height 5 ft 5 in (65 inches):
Ideal weight ≈ 45.5 + 2.3 × (65 − 60) = 45.5 + 11.5 = 57 kg

Important: Ideal weight is only a reference. Healthy weight depends on body composition, age, muscle mass, and overall health. It should not be treated as a strict medical target.

Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

How is ideal weight calculated?
Most formulas use height and sometimes sex to estimate a reference weight.
Why do different calculators give different answers?
Different published formulas use different assumptions and coefficients.
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal weight is a statistical reference; healthy weight is broader and more individual.
Does the formula work for everyone?
No. The formulas are less accurate for very short, very tall, or highly muscular people.
Should I aim exactly for the ideal weight number?
No. Use it only as a general guide and focus on overall health rather than a single number.
