Lean Body Mass (LBM) is the weight of your body excluding fat. It includes muscle, bone, organs, and water.

Common Formulas

Several equations exist. Two well-known ones are:

Boer Formula:
Men: LBM = 0.407 × weight(kg) + 0.267 × height(cm) − 19.2
Women: LBM = 0.252 × weight(kg) + 0.473 × height(cm) − 48.3

James Formula and Hume Formula are also widely used and produce similar but not identical results.

Example

Man, 80 kg, 180 cm (Boer):
LBM ≈ 0.407×80 + 0.267×180 − 19.2 ≈ 32.56 + 48.06 − 19.2 ≈ 61.4 kg

Lean mass is useful for protein intake planning and tracking body composition changes.

Frequently Asked Questions FAQ

What is lean body mass?
Lean body mass is total body weight minus fat mass.
Which formula is best?
No single formula is perfect for everyone. Boer, James, and Hume are common choices.
How is LBM different from muscle mass?
Muscle mass is only one part of lean body mass (which also includes bone, organs, and water).
Can LBM help with protein recommendations?
Yes. Many protein guidelines are based on lean mass or ideal body weight.
Why do formulas give slightly different answers?
Different equations were developed from different study populations and measurements.
